In response to the devastating wildfires near Los Angeles, Rotary and our partners are mobilizing to provide critical support to those affected. The fires have caused immense destruction, displacing tens of thousands of residents and leaving many in urgent need of assistance. The crisis is still ongoing. Here are two Rotary-connected pathways to support those in need, as well as some helpful advice in choosing where to donate and avoiding scams.

Ways You (and Your Club) Can Help

Rotary District 5280, local to the affected area with clubs and members on the ground, has established a Disaster Relief Fund for clubs and individuals to contribute to the relief efforts. The Rotary District 5280 Charitable Foundation is accepting donations to assist those affected by the wildfires. Donations are tax-deductible and will directly impact those most devastated by this disaster. Click here for details on how the funds will be used and how you can contribute.

Support ShelterBox USA (SBUSA): ShelterBox USA has been at the forefront of the relief efforts (see video). On Friday, January 10, SBUSA delivered essential supplies, including ShelterBox blankets and solar lights, to the Pasadena Convention Center, which is currently serving as an evacuation center. These supplies were transported by ShelterBox volunteers and received by ShelterBox USA staff and Ambassador Rene Amy, who personally suffered the loss of his home in the Eaton fire. The delivery was coordinated with Rotary District Governor Albert Hernandez of District 5280.

"We are committed to supporting the communities impacted by these tragic events," said Kerri Murray, President of ShelterBox USA. "Our goal is to provide immediate relief and comfort to those who have lost so much." The ShelterBox team, along with local Rotary clubs, is working tirelessly to ensure that displaced individuals receive the support they need during this challenging time. You might also want to consider other reputable organizations that we know are doing work on the front lines of this disaster. Here are some examples with links to their websites for more information:

American Red Cross - Los Angeles Region
World Central Kitchen

Direct Relief

Pasadena Humane Society

As always, if choosing to give outside of Rotary channels, please always do your research to be sure the organization aligns with your values and to avoid scams. Legitimate organizations will not solicit giving outside of their main website. Always link to donation pages from the official website. Also be wary of texts or emails, and especially the links within them. Do not click on things that are even remotely suspicious and instead do a search for the legitimate site for an organization.
