A few years ago, District 7170 joined forces with the Rotary Club of Sacramento on a global grant to bring clean water to communities in Honduras. That collaboration not only made a meaningful impact but also opened the door to ongoing connections with global partners working on a wide range of humanitarian efforts.
Recently, one such opportunity came to our attention: a compelling initiative called Project Dignity, which focuses on the fight against modern-day slavery and human trafficking in Vietnam. This two-year global grant is being coordinated in partnership with World Vision, and the CNY Rotary Global Grants Committee is now considering how our district might join this effort.
Human trafficking is a devastating global crisis. It is estimated to generate over $150 billion annually, making it the second-largest criminal industry in the world after drug trafficking. In Vietnam alone, more than 7,500 individuals have been identified as victims, with over 90% being women and children. Many of these individuals come from remote, impoverished areas and are especially vulnerable due to a lack of parental care, education, and economic opportunity.
Project Dignity seeks to change that reality. The grant will support preventive education for children, youth, and parents, raising awareness about trafficking risks and the recruitment techniques commonly used by traffickers. It will also offer resources and support to survivors, helping them rebuild their lives and reintegrate into their communities with dignity and security.
The total fundraising goal for this global grant is $400,000, and organizers have already secured $200,000 toward that target. Rotary Clubs across the U.S. are being invited to participate in funding this effort, and our district's Global Grant Committee will formally consider a contribution at its upcoming meeting.
In the meantime, they encourage clubs throughout the district to learn more and consider how you might be part of this meaningful global service opportunity. Even a modest donation can help expand Project Dignity’s reach and impact.
