The Book Club enters its second full year of literary explorations with a variety of books, two of which have Central New York connections.
Our March-April selection, Haven by Ruth Gruber, is an eyewitness account of the rescue of 982 refugees from Nazi Europe and their settlement in Oswego. A supplemental read is also recommended. Holocaust Refugees in Oswego by Ann Callaghan Allen extends the story to the Oswego residents who welcomed the refugees in 1944. Ms. Allen will give a presentation on both books at our regional conference in Albany on April 5th. Not to be missed.
Other selections range from fiction to nonfiction, from Heaven & Earth Grocery Store, to The Boys in the Boat, and from Michener’s Chesapeake to Heart of Gold which is set on the shores of Oneida Lake. Capping this smorgasbord of reading delights will be The Shipping News, winner of the 1994 Pulitzer Prize for fiction.
