The CNY Rotary Book Club convened at the Conference of Champions to hear Ann Callaghan Allen tell the story of the holocaust refugees who were rescued to Oswego in 1944.
Her book “Holocaust Refugees in Oswego” and Ruth Gruber’s book “Haven” are the current selections of the Rotary Book Club. The Book Club will cap the reading experience with a field trip to the Safe Haven Holocaust Refugee Shelter Museum in Oswego in June (TBA).
The Book Club organized a similar field trip to Auburn in 2024 when we visited the Harriet Tubman Museum and Church after reading Syracuse Rotarian Michele Jones Galvin’s book about her great-great-great aunt: “Beyond the Underground: Aunt Harriet, Moses to Her People.” Club members enjoyed that total experience so much that we are seeking a reading selection each year that can be paired with an Upstate NY field trip. Early nominees are Seneca Falls paired with a book about Women’s Suffrage, and Cooperstown paired with a book about baseball.
