Each year on March 8, communities around the globe celebrate International Women’s Day - a moment to recognize the achievements of women and recommit to advancing equity and opportunity for all. For us in Rotary International, it is also a time to reflect on the vital and growing role women play in strengthening our clubs, our communities, and our impact worldwide.

Since welcoming women into membership in 1989, Rotary has been enriched by the leadership, innovation, and compassion women bring to service. Today, women serve as Club Presidents, District Presidents, Trustees, and as the President of Rotary International, demonstrating that inclusive leadership drives meaningful change. Their perspectives deepen our understanding of community needs and broaden the ways we respond to them, just like all elements of diversity do for our benefit.

Some interesting facts about women in Rotary:

  • Globally, 24% of Rotarians are women, but 50% of Rotaractors are women
  • Our district is 52.3% women, which is not surprising for North America
  • The average age of a female member is lower than men - Women: 59, Men: 65

International Women’s Day also reminds us that progress requires intention. Growing and retaining women in Rotary is not simply about numbers; it is about cultivating environments where every voice is valued and every member has the opportunity to lead. By fostering inclusive cultures, flexible engagement opportunities, and strong mentorship, we strengthen our organization for decades to come.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, let us honor the women who have shaped Rotary’s legacy and recommit ourselves to empowering the next generation of leaders. Together, we create a more equitable world—one act of service at a time.
