It is with sadness that our Rotary family announces the peaceful passing of Past District Governor Jim Spencer, a lifelong resident of Middleburgh, New York. He passed away on August 25, 2025 in Cobleskill at the age of 91. Read on for more about his life and details on his services. 

Born on July 6, 1934, Jim dedicated much of his life to serving others—both through his leadership within Rotary and within his beloved community. His commitment, generosity, and unwavering spirit touched countless lives.

PDG Jim was a member of Middleburgh Rotary since 1966 (59 years), he was a Paul Harris Fellow, and he served the former District 7190 as District Governor in 1999-2000.

Jim was predeceased by his parents, Frank R. Spencer and Matilda Spencer (née Rivenburg), and his wife of 52 years, Eleanor. He is survived by his brother, Robert Spencer, and 5 children: Kim Smith (Hoerz), Robert Hoerz, Allen Spencer, Stephen Hoerz (Vicky), and Lane Spencer (Brenda), as well as nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Family, friends, and members of the Rotary community are invited to celebrate Jim’s life during the following services:

Visitation: Friday, September 5, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Coltrain Funeral Home, located at 134 River Street, Middleburgh, NY 12122.

Memorial Service: Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 10:00 AM at the Middleburgh Reformed Church, 178 River Street, Middleburgh, NY 12122.
