The Binghamton Breakfast Rotary Club secured restoration of a World War I monument, in Veterans's Park on Conklin Ave., that had shifted out of plumb in the 107 years since it was installed.
A Rotary member pursued correcting the tipped monument to a respectful condition. Over a two-year period of Rotary follow up, and several changes in department personnel, the City of Binghamton's parks department finally plumbed and straightened the heavy stone monument. The monument bore 85 names of the men of Binghamton that gave their lives securing world freedom. The overgrown greenery was also trimmed back.
Rotary International's purpose is multifaceted, encompassing service, integrity, and fostering world understanding, goodwill and peace. By honoring the "Memorial Grove," and returning it to its original state, the Binghamton Breakfast Rotary reestablished a marker of a historical event, and its spiritual significance.
