John “Ziggy” Zygmunt, 68, of Remsen, formerly of Whitesboro, passed away December 9, 2025, at Wynn Hospital.
John was born, February 22, 1957, in Utica, the son of the late Edward J. and Jean Mills Zygmunt. Raised in Whitesboro, he was active in the Boy Scouts of America where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He was a graduate of Whitesboro Central High School. John was a volunteer in the Whitesboro and Oriskany Fire Departments and participated in Firematics. John also worked for many years with the Town of Whitestown Highway Department, becoming the supervisor of the sewer department.
"Ziggy" was an active member of Rotary International and the Rotary Club of New Hartford, NY. He was a past president and board member of New Hartford Rotary and served on many club and District committees. John was first to volunteer for any project the club was involved in, especially if he was able to show off his cooking talents. John was a volunteer at the CNY Veterans Outreach Center in Utica. Because of his support of his grandson and his Pop Warner Football Championship, they were inducted into the Rome Sports Hall of Fame. John had a lifelong dedication and love for animals.
Survivors include his daughter, Janna (Matthew) Recchio; son, Billy Zygmunt; their mother, Paula Smith; grandchildren, Gina Recchio, Wyatt Zygmunt, and Xavia Zygmunt; sisters, Karen Borawski, and Jady Voce; uncle, Walter Mills; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
