The start of a new year invites reflection on where we have been, what we have accomplished, and how we want to show up in the months ahead. For CNY Rotary, this moment is especially important. While our  over 110-plus clubs are doing extraordinary work across the region, the impact of that work depends not only on service delivered, but on stories told.

Rotary’s motto, Service Above Self, is widely recognized, yet the depth of what that means is not always visible beyond our meeting rooms and project sites. As we begin a new year, there is an opportunity and a responsibility to be more intentional about how we share our mission, our people, and our impact with the broader community.
Public image is not about self promotion. It is about clarity. When communities understand who Rotary is and why Rotarians serve, trust grows, partnerships form, and future leaders find their way to us.

From Doing Good to Being Seen Doing Good
Rotarians are often humble by nature. We focus on the work and move on to the next project. But in today’s digital world, if service is not shared, it stays invisible and our ability to grow from our efforts is diminished. A single photo, a short caption, or a personal reflection can extend the reach of a service project far beyond those present.

Telling Rotary’s story does not require perfection or polish. It requires authenticity. Highlighting volunteers in action, celebrating community partners, and explaining why a project matters helps the public connect with our purpose on a human level.

Every Rotarian Is a Storyteller
Public image is not the responsibility of one chair or committee. It belongs to every member. When Rotarians share club activities on social media, invite guests to meetings, or talk about Rotary in everyday conversations, they help shape how Rotary is perceived.

This year, consider asking:
    • How would someone outside Rotary describe us?
    • Are we telling stories that reflect our diversity, leadership, and local impact?
    • Are we inviting others into our work through visibility and openness?

A New Year Call to Action
As clubs set goals for the year ahead, public image should be part of the conversation. Not an afterthought, but a strategic priority. Strong visibility supports membership growth, strengthens fundraising efforts, and ensures Rotary remains relevant to future generations.

Whether by joining a committee, contributing photos and stories, or simply sharing Rotary’s work with pride on your own social channels, every Rotarian has a role to play. The service will continue. The question is whether the story will be told.

In this new year, let’s commit not only to doing great work, but to making sure our communities know who we are, what we stand for, and why Rotary matters.

Our committee will be assisting with several upcoming trainings, including one centered on membership later this month, accessibility in collaboration with the DEI Committee in February, as well as other relevant topics such as AI at District Learning Assembly, MD PELS and of course, district conference. We hope to see you there! If you have any questions, feel free to contact PI Chair Joe Abraham at news@cnyrotary.org
